What causes Vaginal Odour?
Vaginal odour is commonly linked to vaginitis, which is vaginal inflammation. The three main causes are as follows:
Vaginal yeast infection
A yeast infection occurs when the yeast grows faster then normal. In addition to vaginal odour, the other common affects of a yeast infections are discomfort and vaginal irritation, and will often produce a whitish discharge.
Most women will be affected at some point in their lives by a yeast infection. If you suspect you have a yeast infection, it is important to consult with your doctor, as the wrong treatment may augment your symptoms.
Yeast infections are normally caused by the use of products many women associate with vaginal health, such as feminine perfumes and douches. Other causes of yeast imbalances are Hormonal related; caused by pregnancy or contraceptives.
Treatment:
Yeast infections are typically treated with prescription anti-fungal creams; it can take some time to remove the yeast imbalance in the vagina and it may take a number of different products to solve the issue.
Bacterial vaginosis
Much like yeast, the presence of vaginal bacteria is normal and healthy, however imbalances may occur that produce symptoms such as vaginal odour. Bacterial vaginosis will become noticeable in the form of discharge that carries a pungent, unpleasant odour. Pain while urinating and vaginal irritation are also indicative of bacterial vaginosis.
Treatment:
Treatment relies on antibiotics, which may inflame yeast infections, so diagnosis by a doctor is critical.
Trichomoniasis
Unlike bacterial vaginosis and vaginal yeast infections, trichomoniasis is an STI and one which occurs quite commonly. trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite not a yeast imbalance, but has similar symptoms to yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis. Discomfort may only occur during sex, and as well as discharging an unpleasant odour, the parasite also causes a viscous discharge. Sores, often not visible to the patient, may develop, and as with bacterial infections, urination may be painful.
Treatment:
A single dose of metronidazole administered to a woman and her sex partner is a typical treatment.
