Most of the time, when suffering with a digestive disorder or increased flatulence you will hear a lot about what you can't eat but nobody tells you what you can eat? So we wanted to share with you a few simple foods that are easy on the stomach and may actually aid digestion which in turn should make you less gassy!
Excess gas can build up if you're eating too fast and taking in more air, causing oxygen and nitrogen to collect in the digestive system. Or it can also build up when food is being broken down in the large intestine as gases such as hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide are produced and the only way for them to leave the body is via flatulence or belching! Certain foods also increase flatulence, dairy products being the main culprits along with pulses, beans and apples.
Here is our top 10 list of foods that will help reduce flatulence and some suggestions on how to incorporate them into your diet:
Peppermint - Add peppermint oil to water or drink as peppermint tea to help reduce symptoms of IBS. It helps to reduce colonic spasms and also relaxes the intestine muscle relieving painful cramps and helping gas move through the system.
Pineapple - The protein digesting enzymes in pineapple helps to aid digestion, enjoy a glass of pineapple juice or a fruit salad in your everyday diet.
Natural Yogurt - It's recommended to eat 2-3 small pots of pro-biotic yogurt that contains acidophilus or biphidus every day to bring good bacteria to the digestive system aiding the breakdown of food.
Ginger - Drinking ginger tea or including ginger when cooking helps to stimulate saliva and stomach bile which in turn aids the digestion of foods before it gets through the digestive track.
Papaya - Papaya contains papain (a protein digesting enzyme) as well as other active compounds that can fight flatulence and bloating. Great in a smoothie or in a fruit salad.
Fennel Seeds - Help relieve indigestion, bloating, flatulence, constipation and IBS. They stimulates digestion to prevents gas. just take teaspoon of seeds after a meal, drink fennel tea or a teaspoon of powdered fennel seeds with water. Fennel seeds are known to relieve water retention & help cure bad breathe.
Miso Soup - Available from most Asian food stores or the Asian food section of most supermarkets. The soup contains probiotics and will stimulate saliva and stomach bile in a similar way to ginger.
Basil - Add a handful of leaves to a litre of water and leave to infuse, then take 3 cups a day after meals to help prevent stomach spasms and aid digestion.
Cardamom - Medical practices recommend cardamom to aid digestive problems, it's said to relieve gas and aid constipation. Combine with ginger and fennel seeds in boiling water then when cool drink 3-4 cups a day to reduce flatulence - also a great source of minerals.
