Could your lunchtime snack be causing flatulence?

A recent study amongst French women found that those who eat bread, sandwiches and pastries often suffered more with flatulence! Whole grains such as wheat and oats contain fibre, when the fibre is broken down by bacteria in the large intestine it produces gas as a by-product, which causes flatulence.

Many doctors in the past have recommended a high fibre diet when suffering from stomach related illnesses, it helps things like constipation but makes pain and bloating worse! So, if it’s just flatulence you’re hoping to rid, we’d recommend lowering your fibre intake but if you do suffer from IBS maybe talk to your doctor first.

To reduce your flatulence try swapping your sandwich or pastries for a rice dish, rice is the only grain that’s not known to cause flatulence!
